M. Lasica / J. Satinský: OUR FRIEND RENÉ

Aren't we all just a bit René? Strikingly current satirical play by the legendary author duo.

The play by Lasica and Satinský, Our Friend René, was supposed to be premiered on November 8, 1980, but a day before the premiere, communist censors banned the performance. It was not until 1986 that it was finally staged. The author duo processes themes of human limitation and unfreedom with irony, sarcasm, and sharp humor, drawing inspiration from the first Slovak novel, René the Young Man's Adventures and Experiences by Jozef Ignác Bajza from the 18th century, which criticized the society of the time and was also banned for a while. The production by the Spiš Theater, in the spirit of the 2025/2026 season motto 'The Good Old Days,' offers a new perspective on the timeless literary phenomenon that has impacted several generations.
