A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE HIGH TATRAS REGION – TATRANSKÉ MATLIARE
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE HIGH TATRAS REGION – TATRANSKÉ MATLIARE
Discover the history, monuments, and attractions of the most famous Tatra settlements during a cultural and tourist tour in JUNE with a professional tourist guide, lasting approximately 2 hours. THE ENTRY FOR THE JOURNEY IS FREE.
What you can learn:
Each Tatra settlement is unique; in each, you will find something that is not present in the others. For example, from Tatranská Kotlina, you can reach the only accessible cave in the Tatras, the Belianska Cave. Moreover, you will also find an old quarry, which today serves as a climbing wall, and Pálenica Mountain, where lime was once burned. Thanks to the rediscovery of the Belianska Cave, another settlement, Tatranské Matliare, was established. Once a modest part of the city of Vysoké Tatry, it hosted renowned personalities such as Franz Kafka, Fraňo Kráľ, Emil Zátopek, and Ludvík Svoboda. There was also a military garrison here, which took care of border security and helped to build, for example, the Votrubova Hut. Jiří Wolker was treated in Tatranská Polianka, and you can still relax today in the pleasant surroundings of Wolker's ponds. This settlement is key if you wish to climb the highest peak in Slovakia – Gerlach. Dr. Michal Guhr, the founder of the sanatorium that you can visit today, was not only an excellent physician but also a promoter of winter sports in former Hungary. Few know that it was thanks to him that Polianka was the first settlement to have ski jumps.
Which settlement is the oldest, where Maša Haľamová lived, when was Ľudovít Štúr first on Kriváň, where were the ice hockey world championships, why do Smokovce have the sun in their coat of arms, how did the name Smokovec originate, where was the first swimming pool built in the Tatras, where do mineral springs emerge throughout the Tatras, which mountain hut is the oldest, where is Mrs. Čenková's cottage, and many other interesting facts about the Tatra settlements that you may not have even known.
